Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 cups California walnuts
- 1 tablespoon za’atar
- 2 teaspoons sumac
- 1 teaspoon garlic salt, or to taste
- 1 teaspoon sugar
Preparation
- Preheat oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Place onions and red pepper in a small zipper seal bag. Seal the bag and crush with a meat mallet or rolling pin to break up all ingredients.
- Transfer to a small bowl and stir in brown sugar, sea salt, and paprika.
- Whisk egg white in a medium bowl until foamy. Add walnuts and stir well with a rubber scraper to coat as evenly as possible.
- Sprinkle with the onion and sugar mixture and stir well again.
- Transfer to the prepared baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes or until walnuts are golden brown, stirring every 5 minutes. Let cool to crisp, then transfer to an airtight container.
Recipe Tip: Walnuts may also be cooked in an air fryer set at 350°F for 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
